Outcomes vs. Objectives
These two terms get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t. One names the destination; the other names the steps that get a learner there — and keeping them separate is what lets me check whether a lesson actually builds toward the promise the course makes.
Course Learning Outcomes
The broad, end-of-course promise: what a learner can do once the whole course is behind them. There are only a handful, they cover wide ground, and I measure them across the course through capstone work rather than a single quiz. A CLO answers: what does this person walk away able to do?
Learning Objectives
The small, specific target inside one lesson or module — narrow, measurable, tied to one activity and one check. Many objectives ladder up to a single CLO. A well-written one names the condition, the observable action, and how good is good enough (Mager, 1997). It answers: what will this person prove they can do in the next thirty minutes?
The shorthand I use with myself: a CLO is where the learner lands by the end; an objective is what they master in the next lesson so they get there. If objectives run out before the CLO is met, the course has a gap. If objectives pile up with no CLO above them, I built activity for its own sake. Writing both, and checking the ladder between them, is how I keep alignment honest (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005).
Bloom’s Taxonomy: The Verb Sets the Demand
Bloom’s Taxonomy sorts thinking into six levels, from remembering a fact to building something new. The revised version (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001) swapped Bloom’s original nouns for verbs and moved Create to the top. That verb matters for one reason: the verb I pick sets the cognitive demand, and it has to match the activity and the assessment. Choose “list” and then ask learners to design something, and the lesson is out of alignment before it starts.
- Recall — pull facts and terms back from memory. Recalling the six components of structured literacy.
- Understand — explain an idea in your own words. Explaining why morphology is the fastest vocabulary lever in a secondary classroom.
- Apply — use what you know in a new, concrete situation. Running the morpheme-mapping routine with a real vocabulary set.
- Analyze — break something into parts and spot the pattern. Reading a student sample to locate exactly where decoding breaks down.
- Evaluate — judge against criteria and defend the call. Judging one’s own instruction against structured-literacy principles.
- Create — put parts together into something new. Designing a literacy-embedded lesson component that holds its rigor.
The Six Revised Course Learning Outcomes
These are the same six outcomes drafted in Unit 4 — revised, not replaced. Understanding by Design keeps the outcomes fixed while everything else iterates, so the target hasn’t moved; the wording has. By the end of Decoding the Code, learners (Grades 6–12 content-area teachers) will be able to:
- Explain the six components of structured literacy — phonology, sound–symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics — and how each supports reading development in adolescent learners. [Understand]
- Analyze samples of student reading and writing to pinpoint whether a breakdown is occurring at decoding, fluency, or comprehension. [Analyze]
- Apply morphology-based strategies — roots, prefixes, and suffixes — to teach the academic vocabulary specific to their content area. [Apply]
- Design a content-area lesson component that carries explicit, multisensory literacy support without lowering the rigor of the material. [Create]
- Select assistive technologies and accommodations — text-to-speech, decodable digital text, specialized fonts, audio scaffolds — matched to a specific student profile. [Evaluate]
- Evaluate their own instruction against structured-literacy principles and set one measurable goal for their classroom practice. [Metacognition]
What changed since Unit 4, and why the ladder holds
CLO 1 originally read “identify … and explain.” I cut “identify” because a teacher who can explain how each component supports reading has already shown they can name it — the higher verb absorbs the lower one. I also gave every outcome a single lead verb and a parallel “teachers will” stem, so the set reads as one measurable ladder rather than six separate sentences.
The six-component spine stays put. That backbone is the fixed target Understanding by Design protects: I sharpened the wording without moving the destination. Each verb now carries a Bloom level I can build an activity and a check around — Explain gets an interactive match, Analyze gets a diagnostic, Create gets a design-and-submit artifact. When the activity, the verb, and the evidence are one conversation, the ladder from objective to outcome stays honest (Dick et al., 2015; Wiggins & McTighe, 2005).
